Lil'Dragons is a national program for children ages 4-7, designed by black belt Kimber Hill and Century Martial Arts, then modified for Blue Dragon by Sensei Kim. Classes are slightly shorter and activity based to keep interest peaked and rewards are given more often to motivate the younger student. Lil'Dragons is like a Martial Arts prep school in a way. Classes are more focused on developing the manners, respect, self control, and understanding needed to become a Martial Artist. Students learn and improve balance, strength, flexibility, teamwork, respect, Dojo manners, large motor skills, safety and basic Martial Art techniques. Classes are taught in a rotating curriculum and Bully Defense and even Board Breaking are covered monthly. A Special feature at BDMA is our Dragon Cards, these are used in most Lil'Dragons classes to help teach manners and respect and is a favorite of students and parents alike! Classes also cover kicking/punching, rolling, grappling positions and forms in a safe low impact environment.
At Blue Dragon Martial Arts we offer many great programs. The Lil' Dragon program stems from three main styles. Some call this a Mixed Martial Art (MMA) but this has come to mean a style that is much more hardcore than is appropriate for most children, like the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship). Though, fundamentally, what we teach is a mixed martial art (that’s what the kids want to know) we often refer to our style as "blended" to differentiate ourselves from MMA. We know that MMA is hugely popular right now, but finding the right academy to teach your child safely and with the respect and discipline of the more traditional arts can be difficult. That is why we are proud to be one of the few "blended" or mixed martial art schools that focuses primarily on kids while teaching it with a safe, age appropriate curriculum. The Lil' Dragon program incorporates techniques, forms, traditions and styles from Karate (a Japanese striking art using punching, kicking, knee strikes, and elbows strikes, as well as traditional forms called "Katas"), Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (a martial art, sport, and self defense system that focuses on grappling and ground techniques), and Modern Arnis (a Filipino stick fighting martial art). In addition to these three main martial arts, Blue Dragon Martial Arts incorporates many techniques and drills from supplemental styles, such as knees, elbows, and clinching from Muay Thai Kickboxing, take downs and no-gi throws from Wrestling (Collegiate/Freestyle style), the most effective joint locks and break falls from Aikido, and general self defense techniques to name a few. Sensei Kim shares a similar belief with past martial arts legends, like Bruce Lee, the belief that there are "different tools for different situations," and that everyone's body, style, and aptitude is different. Your child will be exposed to and learn a wide range of martial arts in this program.
Your child will get a free Lil' Dragon "Gi" and belt when you sign them up. That's all they need for the class until they become a yellow belt (5 belt tests to get to yellow). Once they are a yellow belt, they will need wood sticks for Arnis and sparring gear:
We sell all the necessary equipment at our Pro Shop in they gym.
$75 per month to bring them once a week. $115 per month to bring them two or more times a week. We don't have contracts and don't believe in hard selling. To find out more about pricing and payments, click here.
Ages 4-8 years old. Once your child turns 8, they move up to the Blue Dragon Program.
If you'd like your child to try a class for free, just come into any of our regularly scheduled classes 15 minutes before class starts (no need to make an appointment). Have your child wear sports shorts or sweat pants and a t-shirt.
We teach that martial arts is more than just learning technique, but that it's a lifestyle our instructors and students choose where combat techniques are learned hand in hand with being respectful, responsible, and compassionate to those around us. Martial Arts is about improving you mind and sentiment along with your body. Your child will learn and experience more than just Karate in this class.
Modern Arnis is a Filipino stick fighting art form (in 2009 it became the official national martial art and sport of the Philippines, and is taught as a formal part of PE in their education system). The founders goal (Remy Presas') was to create an injury-free self-defense system. It's effective, and equally as important, the kids really enjoy learning it.
Belt testing takes place every 10 weeks. If the instructors and parents think the student is ready, they can participate in the belt test to try to achieve their next belt ranking.

Everyone starts out as a white belt in the Lil' Dragon program. Throughout their training, the kids have the potential to earn the following belt ranks:
Lil' Dragons enter the Blue Dragon program when they turn 8 years old with the belt rank that they achieved in the Lil' Dragon's program. The time-frame it takes to achieve stripes and belts is dependent on many different factors, such as frequency of training, aptitude, effort put into training, how much the student practices at home, private classes taken, etc. As with all our other programs, belts are truly earned, and not simply awarded for attendance, so you and your child can feel confident and successful in the belts they earn!
